What do you think defines community?
Community is an important part of belonging and is formed through interactions between group, place and the individual. I believe that the exploration of Radu Mihaileanu’s film “Live and Become” has enabled us to understand the importance of group perspective towards outsiders in belonging. Judith Wright’s 1920 poem “Remittance Man” highlights the interaction between individual and place, whilst discussing the need for change in some circumstances.
Being residents of a multicultural country, we are able to appreciate the importance of understanding and accepting different cultures. However, in Live and become the contrast of this is shown through the journey of the refugees who find it hard to integrate in the society. When an individual connects to a person who has had similar past experiences, their relationship strengthens and as a result the individual feels a greater sense of belonging. Schlomo seeks the leader of Falashas, Qes Amhra, he says “you are the only one that has spoken about the family left behind” this shows the mutual connection and understanding between the two Ethiopians. Later Qes Amhra becomes Schlomo’s mentor and their relationship strengthens, through which Schlomo feels a sense of belonging to pursue other relationships and form a group. Ultimately Schlomo marries Sara symbolising his integration into the community. At the wedding Schlomo has bright facial expressions and maintains eye contact, the costuming matches with the people around him, the lighting in the scene is brighter which depicts happiness.
