ADD GREEN. In “Attitudes Towards Muslims Post-9/11” Masarrat Khan says, “Since then, increased racial and religious animosity has left Arabs, Middle Easterners, Muslims, and those who bear stereotyped physical resemblance to members of these groups, fearful of potential hatred and hostility from persons of other cultures”(Khan). Middle Eastern, Arabian, and Muslim people are forced into stereotypes based solely on their appearance because of one event that happened over 10 years ago. Though 9/11 was a tragic event, it should not equivocate to millions of people being bullied for something they did not do. Religious discrimination occurs too often in America. People who have names that sound Middle Eastern or look Middle Eastern start out in society with disadvantages. For them, finding a job, getting into college, and even going to the store is more difficult. They always have to be on their guard, watching out for people looking to hurt them through physical or emotional violence. Even if they just want to buy something, they may still get hostile looks from cashiers and other shoppers. Most Americans do not get the hostile looks, so they have no understanding of the emotional violence Middle Eastern people have to go through on a daily basis. FINISH …show more content…
It may sound surprising, but people have been abandoned because of something they can not control- their skin color. In “Desiree’s Baby” Armand and Desiree had a baby together, and after a few years, they realized their child was mulatto. “‘Yes, I want you to go.’... Moreover he [Armand] no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name” (Chopin). Armand loved Desiree before learning her skin color. After he found out she was not white, he did not love her, and told her to go back to her parents. Though the story was set in the late 1800s, the same thing happens in today’s society. People will choose not to talk to people because they are Mexican, African, or Middle Eastern. What reason is this occurring? White supremacy. This idea was brought to America with the original colonists, feeling that they were superior to the native people already living there, then thought the same way about slaves. This racial prejudice definitely should be a concept long forgotten, but it continues to plague American society today. FINISH
