For the Puritans, committing adultery was a pure and evil sin. This came straight from their religion and the Geneva Bible which they commonly used. According to a novel called "The Scarlett Letter", it states "A bodily disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part" (Source Novel). Here the quote explains how adultery was a disease and illness. In the Puritan society, religion has taught the people that the act of adultery was a horrible sin to commit. It would spiritually adulterate and corrupt the person. In modern American society, religion also teaches people values and principles to live by. In other words, religion has still been lodged into the standards and values of people in modern America. Referring to an article called, "Puritan Values Still Resonate in Today's USA", a group of Americans and a group or Canadians took place in an experiment to measure the significances of religion and salvation in people's lives. Although as time passed there were some similarities from the Puritans that passed on to modern society, not all of the Puritan society aspects have passed on to modern America. Government policies changed and affected the modern perspective on big issues such as same sex marriage which was considered a sin in Puritan times. However, the concept of committing adultery still remains a negative issue. In modern times, many aspects of life are changing especially in this past decade. People are not able to come out and fit in society whether their sexuality is hetero, bi, gay, or lesbian. Would the Puritan society's influence still carry on into the future? All in all, the modern American society is a mixture of a revolutionized government from the Puritans while still conveying the importance of religion in everyday
