Nonviolent drug offenders are receiving lesser sentences because they do not prove to be a huge threat to society. Many are in favor of this change because it is very expensive to house a convict. While it may help financially in this manner, many will return to prison because they were not prepared to reenter the world. The Fair Chance Act was created in order to prevent the federal government from finding out the applicant’s criminal history until after their decision is made (Escobedo). This would enable ex-convicts to have equal opportunity at job openings than someone who was not a convicted felon. An example of someone who is trying to help out convicts is Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg went to a prison and taught convicts how to code in hopes of helping them obtain a job once released (Escobedo). More activities like this need to exist within a prison. In addition to programs that will help ex-convicts obtain jobs after being released, prisons need to work to help convicts reconnect with their families. These interactions are very important because these convicts are going to need a support group once released. It is not easy reentering a community that associates you with crime.
I think that the reform that is being proposed is a step in the right direction. With more ex-convicts being released back into the community, more ex-convicts are in search for a job. Many reformers are working to create a more desirable and beneficial outcome for prisoners being released. A successful reintegration into society will cause fewer ex-convicts to return to prison and enable them to be better off once
