This is used to inflict fear into people contemplating travelling to Australia by means of illegal boating and educates on the impossibility of ‘making Australia home’. Hurley directly addresses Tony Abbott and his views on refugees in detention centres. The text directly states Abbott’s views and instantly counters it with the unethical effect. Bowen’s text states the issue of offshore detention it directly talks of the public's involvement and how society’s view affects the treatment of refugees. It uses emotive vocabulary such as ‘helplessly’, ‘tragic’, and ‘horror’ to inflict an emotional connection to the refugees and their situation.
