In Great Expectations, the main character Pip while visiting the graves of his parents and siblings is grabbed by an escaped convict. The convict orders Pip into stealing both food and a file for his shackles from the home of his wicked sister and her husband Joe Gargery, the blacksmith. The escaped convict is soon arrested for fighting with a convict who also had escaped and protects Pip when asked how he got the food and file by claiming he stole it from the Gargery home. One day, Pip is taken by his Uncle Pumblechook to play at the Satis House owned by Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham is a wealthy old spinster who wears an old wedding dress everywhere she goes and keeps all the clocks in her house stopped at the same time. Pip and Herbert try to sneak Magwitch off in a rowboat but the police are tipped off by Compeyson. Magwitch and Compeyson fight in the river, and Compeyson drowns. Magwitch is sentenced to death but dies before he can be hanged. Due to the arrest and death of Magwitch, Pip loses his fortune and becomes ill moving back home to find out Joe and Biddy had gotten married. The ending to Great Expectation’s is different to most as it has two different endings and the reader must decide which one is more deserved. In the first ending, Pip and Estella randomly meet on the street and it is revealed that Drummle had died but she had remarried a doctor. They talk for a while and Pip tells Estella that he is glad she found someone even though it wasn’t him she found and is now a different person then she was before. The second ending, Pip and Estella meet at the Satis House and talk. When the pair are finished talking Estella tells Pip that they are friends and walk off holding
