Pip has two people in his life that Dickens describes their relationship as him being thankful for them. Joe is one of the people that Pip has a special relationship with because he was the first one to show him love and in the book it says, “When I offered to your sister to keep company, and to be asked in church at such times as she was willing and ready to come to the forge, I said to her, 'And bring the poor little child. God bless the poor little child,' I said to your sister, 'there's room for him at the forge!” (Dickins 59). In the beginning of the story, Dickens starts to create a bond between Joe and Pip with events such as Thanksgiving dinner and gravy, but as the story progresses Pip gets invited over to a ladie’s house by the name of Miss Havisham, and she has an adopted daughter of the name Estella, and Pip thinks he has met the love of his life. He finds out that she thinks he is not for her because he is poor and uneducated and that is where he starts on his journey to become a gentleman and try to become rich to impress Estella, but what he doesn’t realize is he is hurting the people around him and starts to feel embarrassed by his family and even Joe.
