Referral Process The first step of the referral process is to make sure the reason of the referral correlates with the type of services the agency provides (Cohen, Kelleher, & Mannarino, 2008). To receive mental health services, the child and adolescent can self-refer or can be referred by the school personnel, parents/guardians, other students, or community agencies. Often clients will have mixed feelings with regard to their referral for mental health services, some may be okay with being referred for services while others may feel nervous or anxious to the reason for the referral or even feel scared thinking that they are in trouble.
