Why Atticus is a Good Parent in To Kill a Mockingbird
There are many people who think that Atticus is a good parent but some feel he is a bad parent. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a great book that is filled with many good stories and messages. One of the biggest debates however is whether Atticus is a good father or not. While Atticus may make some mistakes as a parent, overall he is an admirable father. Atticus is a good parent for so many reasons, for example one of the positive things about Atticus is that he teaches his children how to be a good person. He also deeply cares for his children and spends as much time as possible with them supported by “.. and I found the satisfactory of our father: he played with us, read for us and treated us with courteous detachment” (Lee 6). This quote shows how deeply Atticus loves his kids and wants to spend as much time as possible with them, helping them through their life or any hard times. This is supported by “Atticus said as tactfully as he could that he doesn’t think he could stand a pageant tonight but Jem could take her” (Lee 339). This quote shows that he lets the kids go places in the town unsupervised late at night. However he is only not going because he had a long day at his job providing for a better life for his kids and his family. People also say that he seems to not shield them from the truth at all, he is actually just trying to show them the real world and trying to get them ready for their future. He also is doing this because he cares about his kids and wants to set a good honest example for them to grow into just like he is. Atticus is a good parent and overall is a very good person, he has some flaws here and there but he always can turn it around.
