He was caring, understanding, and loving from the beginning to the end of the book. In the beginning Scout talks about how he is always there for her and Jem and how he doesn’t just ignore them even when he is really busy. He shows he listens and understands his kids in situations to help them get over problems that upset them. "If you 'll concede the necessity of going to school, we 'll go on reading every night just as we always have. Is it a bargain"(Lee 31)? Atticus says this when he is trying to comfort Scout after she had a bad day at school. Atticus realized that this upset Scout, but while he was trying to comfort her he was also trying to teach her to look at the situation from her teacher 's point of view. After she did that he made a compromise with her that would make her feel better and to teach her not to judge people so quickly. Atticus was always trying his best to help his kids understand what they didn’t know understanding that they were young and that some things need to be explained further for them. On page 124, Scout asks Calpurnia what rape was and Cal didn’t give her an answer at all. When Atticus finds out he informs Cal that kids can feel when someone is avoiding answering a question and it makes them more curious.
