Africa is not far behind the USA. They have had many different forms of cultural struggles that we have had too. For example, in Africa they had segregation and oppression just like we did. In the late 1600’ś - 1700’s the dutch first arrived and began dominating and segregating the native black population. In the 1800’s blacks were segregated from whites just like they were here. They couldn’t even drink tea with the whites without a permit. This was called ¨Apartheid¨ and was officially established in 1940-1950. Okonkwo has a very divers life, and believes in war and fighting. His clan on the other hand do not support the idea of war. ¨He knew Umuofia would not go to war.¨ (205) His family was easily influenced and took to the christian missionaries quickly. ¨One morning Okonkwo’s cousin, Amikwu, was passing by the church on his way from the neighboring village, when he saw Nwoye among the christians.¨ (151) Okonkwo and his cousin were not happy about Okonkwoś wife, Nwoye, being with the christians. They had a different opinion on the christian missionaries then the other members of the village. This is a whole different story than what you would hear if you studied the Berlin Conference. In the Berlin Conference europe came and divided Africa and forced everyone into the division. Africa had no say in this, and they didn’t like it, but in Things Fall Apart when the missionaries came over many people in the clan were fine with them and welcomed them into their land.
