A few years ago, Time Magazine featured a digital composite of a face of a mestizo woman as their cover page to show the progressing nature of multiculturalism in the USA. The face served as an idea of what people would look like in 21st century America (London, n.d). According to the American Community Survey, the U.S immigrant population stands at 13.5 percent of the total population, which shows that diversity in the U.S is increasing each day. Yet, according to a recent government report, racism is still a concern in U.S schools. For example, 16 percent of black students are expelled per year in comparison to only 5 percent of their white counterparts, showing a disproportionately worse treatment of a perceived minority …show more content…
In addition to this, the report further concludes that students of colour do not receive any encounter with experienced teachers, thus, decreasing the quality of education received by them and further increasing their dropout rates (Resmovits, 2014). However, racism in U.S schools is not only restricted to students but also extends to teachers. In the same report, it was shown that teachers in schools with lower diversity (higher white populations) are paid more than those teaching in schools with higher diversity, specifically with black and Latino students. (Resmovits, 2014). On the other hand, in the globalizing world of today, to decrease racism, various agencies such as School Mediation Associates of Cambridge, MA work with schools to create new multicultural educational curriculums to develop harmony between student groups. According to the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy, “the term ‘multicultural’ is often used as a descriptive term to characterize the fact of diversity in a society.” (2016). Hence, these multicultural curriculums aim at settling conflicts that emerge due to race (Vernay, 1990). With this introduction to the topic, it is illustrated that there are perceived “differences” (Guillaumin, 1999, p.43) between people in U.S education systems as depicted by the
