In society today, racial tension is a massive issue that we face as Americans. It consumes many of the complications that the media discusses. Some may say that the media adds to this racial tension. Nevertheless, people today are the victims and the culprits of this racial tension. The article that I will be discussing in this essay is about the racial tensions between Muslims and the American people, and how the terror group ISIS is raising these racial tensions. The article talks about how Muslims who live in the United States are treated differently than other people. Cultural discrimination is defined as exclusion, restriction, or hate that is directed towards a person or a group of people on the basis of perceived or real differences of cultural values or beliefs. In this article, the concept of cultural discrimination is present when the article talks about the view of Muslims in the eyes of the American people. One example it gives is how some Muslims reported that people look at them in suspicion and call them offensive names. This is clearly hate towards Muslims just because of the belief that all Muslims are bad people because of the terror group ISIS. Aversive racism is when there is racism towards a person or group of people that is hidden or not obvious. For example, if someone thinks bad about the African American around them but does not actually say anything to them, yet it is obvious the person does not like them, then this is aversive racism. In this article, aversive racism is shown when the article talks about how the government treats Muslims differently with increased monitoring. The American government does not clearly say that there is increased monitoring going on with Muslims, but it is implied. Thus, aversive racism is shown in this article when the article discusses how Muslims believe that there is an increase in monitoring them by the American government.
