Teaching is a profession that many find to be rewarding, it is one of the few professions that allows one to make a difference in the life of youth and the next generation of society on a daily basis. Everyday teachers have an impact on the lives of youth in positive ways but their intelligence is still questioned with many people associating teachers as being from the lower spectrum of academia. Several negativities are associated with the quality of teachers however, rigorous testing is required to become certified, all the required skills are not or cannot be taught in teacher’s college and passion for sharing knowledge cannot be taught.

Elementary teachers are responsible for building the foundations of our youth. Many elementary teachers and even professors that were asked to take a phonics test were unable to complete it with ease as they should be able to. “Emily Binks-Cantrell of Texas A&M University and her colleagues tested 66 professors of reading instruction for their knowledge of literacy concepts. When asked to identify the number of phonemes in a word, they were correct 62 percent of the time. They struggled more with morphemes, correctly identifying them 27 percent of the time.” The problems and struggles that youth of today are facing when learning phonics and the basic structures of the English language should not be held accountable to teachers but rather the instructors who educate future teachers as professors were noted to not be competent with literacy concepts. Furthermore, low math scores on standardized testing are becoming more frequent due to the fact that it is not a requirement for most Bachelor of Education programs. Teacher education programs require students to take courses related to educational law, child development and the theories of education. Teachers require an undergraduate degree plus additional education through a Bachelor of Education program. This translates into six years of expensive university related costs, examinations and practice teaching. Once university is complete and a certification is obtained teachers must than market themselves as a prime teacher candidate to be hired in a extremely competitive job market. For instance, for an individual to become a kindergarten teacher in Ontario, one must complete six years at university to gain an undergraduate degree and a Bachelor of Education in order to teach youth the fundamentals of all learning; numeracy, reading and writing. This requires one to be dedicated maintain their GPA at a particular level in order to be accepted into a Bachelor of Education program. Society places blame on teachers when bad results of standardized testing in reading, writing or mathematics are released publically. Teachers lacking knowledge is not the case in this predicament because after six years of university education one should be knowledgeable of the content presented to their students in elementary and secondary schools, the cause of this predicament is teacher training.
