The story of Louis Zamperini in Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken tells the struggle of the Olympic athlete from being lost at sea for almost two months to being a prisoner of war in multiple camps of Japan. The pain that Louie experienced was not all physical. The veteran’s exposure to mental abuse matched equally (possibly even more) to the amounts of beatings he got on a daily basis. After the war Louis suffered from PTSD which eventually lead him into alcoholism. Even though alcoholism is a serious disease, Louis Zamperini quotes that there is one thing worse than alcoholism, hatred.…
AA meeting was at the Episcopal Church of Nativity I was eight years old when I found out what alcoholism was. My best friend would always be at my house for dinner or just to be away from home because her mother would be passed out from being intoxicated. My best friend would have to care for herself and sometimes after our soccer games we would have to give her a ride home because her mother wouldn't show up. I watched my best friend go through this for years until her mother went to a AA meeting.…

The majority of society has a notion that alcoholism is a disease rather than a choice, however any addictive behavior is started by an individual's willingness to use the substance. “Research has shown that alcoholism is a choice, not a disease, and stripping alcohol abuser of their choice, by applying the disease concept, is a threat to the health of the individual.”(Baldwin,2003). The author argues that fraudulent research has made the disease concept accepted by society in place of calling alcoholism a choice. Baldwin points to a flaw in the research “The surveys he based his conclusions on were from a handpicked group of alcoholics.…
When one thinks of support groups, the most common one that comes to mind is Alcoholics Anonymous. However, there are a myriad of groups out there that address the need of almost every individual. One such is Narcotics Anonymous (NA). This is a nonprofit fellowship dedicated to help those who are addicted to drugs. I shall recount my experiences and thoughts after attending one of their meetings.…
During most of my "drinking career" I never really considered myself an alcoholic. I mean, I functioned in life normally. I had a house, a wife, kids, a job, never in trouble with the law, a faithful church goer, a youth sports coach... etc. I never showed up to functions under the influence, never missed work or important dates because of drinking, I thought I had it under control. Other than being anxious and not feeling so well physically, nobody in the outside world could even tell I had a problem.…
Over 10 percent of kids are affected by an alcoholic parent (Buddy T). That means that over 10% of families are also affected by alcoholism. How alcoholism affects a family mainly has to do with who the alcoholic is, what the alcoholic does, and how the family reacts. First, we need to talk about who the alcoholic is.…
This is an autobiography comprised on how a dad’s alcoholism affects not only the author but his family. The circumstances in which you are raised have a large impact on the type of adult that you will be. Thus, how you are raised also affects how you will raise your own children and how they will grow up. What caught my attention about the writing of the autobiography was the how relatable and clear the details within the document were. For example, the first line of the story is “my father drank,” nothing more had to be said because you knew the dad was a drunk and he did not like that his father was this way.…
Alcohol addiction treatment helps thousands of alcoholics across the United States make lasting recoveries each year. Although many laypeople still believe alcoholism to be a matter of willpower rather than a disease, it is a neurological condition which requires clinical alcohol addiction treatment. Like other addictions, alcoholism causes permanent changes to sufferers' brain chemistries and makes them dependent on alcohol for daily activities. Despite the widespread success of rehab, many people still don't understand what goes on at treatment clinics. Since alcohol use is so prevalent in American society, communities across the country need to gain a better understanding of the ways rehab specialists treat alcoholism.…
When people who are suffering from an addiction decide it's time to cease the madness, the number of available options for combatting their disease is limited. There are many quick fix solutions being offered, but the only option that has proven reliable over time is getting help from professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. Of course, some people are rightfully concerned about the the safety aspects of these types of facilities. The Importance of Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers Not surprisingly, the alternative to getting help from a treatment center is a life devoted to constant struggles and unhappiness. At some point, one's life will be put at risk, creating a major crisis.…
Socially Constructed Illness: Alcoholism The view of daily consumption of alcohol has changed over the years in the United States society. In the past over use of alcohol was not known as a disorder, but, over time, US society has entitled the misuse of alcohol as alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence and alcoholism. Additionally, society has categorized the misuse of alcohol as a human illness. Researches continue to define the causes and learn of preventative measure to stop alcoholism.…
In the National Association for Children of Alcoholics research article, the organization emphasis the importance of research into the problems faced by children of parents with alcohol problems. The article also states that, “Alcohol was found to be the most harmful drug in a recent study that ranked 20 drugs according to the harm they cause to the user and to others” (NACOA). Those effected the most by this substance abuse are primary children. The research article continues by saying, “Parental alcohol problems are associated with negative outcomes in children, e.g. poorer physical and psychological health (and therefore higher hospital admission rates), poor educational achievement, eating disorders and addiction problems, many of which persist into adulthood” (NACOA). This relates back…
Beer smells disgusting; I've hated the smell since I was 6. Weekly, my dad would come home from his construction job and spend time with his best friends Budweiser, Bud Light, and Corona. He would guzzle several beers every night. The alcohol was consuming his life, and his addiction was consuming my life too. I hated seeing my father intoxicated because he wasn't the same person drunk, for the alcohol consumed his soul as if a demon possessed him.…
Alcoholism is a chronic illness that gets a lot of stigma on a daily basis. Many people do not understand the illness and that it is a disease. They see it as a burden and a problem. If someone decides to not drink when they go out the person automatically thinks that the person is a recovering alcoholic. Many of the nurses that I work with have an exasperated behavior towards alcoholics, these patients are not the ones they want to care for and seem irritated to have to deal with these type of patients.…
