I received a quality education in every grade and every teacher tried to prepare me for the next year. In high school my education was directed towards the overall goal of a future college degree. In my second elementary school I had a principal that believed every student that came through his school would leave with a good education and a belief that one day each one of them would go on to college. Of course that did not come true for all of them but in the fourth grade preparing for a new school in fifth grade it was nice to know that my principal had the faith that each student was college bound when they left his facility. I remember at each awards day he started it off by getting every student to answer in unison one question “where will good grades and a good attitude get you one day” and the answer was screamed by our tiny voices “TO COLLEGE.” If every principal still encouraged there students to think of the future in such a way with a positive attitude and the knowledge required to move on America might be better off. Instead the pep talk students get from principals now includes “everyone needs to learn so we do well on exams and behave yourselves so you do not get in trouble” or at least along those lines. It seems that lifelong education has in a sense become less important and short term education has …show more content…
With less emphasis being placed on the students who are doing well and are alert and have a desire to learn and move on through the material; instead ,the emphasis is placed on the lumps that could really give a hoot about school. Where is the sense in that yes I know no child left behind but I mean come on if there are fifteen students who understand and five who do not three of which have no desire to understand the odds are in the favor of the fifteen. That is not the case though instead the class is held up by those two who could learn it but need a little more attention. I realize that they want to learn but after years of it always being the same student holding up progress maybe they are not quite up to the appropriate level yet and may need extra tutoring and attention. Public schools systems fail here because time and time again these poor students fall through the cracks and are left struggling and are not able to enjoy school because they are too busy trying to grasp a concept they are not quite ready for. Sadly high school weeds these students out indirectly whether through drop outs or with them not placing in honors classes and finally being educated along with other students that struggle on a basic more direct
