Fernanda, is a 24-year female that works with Allergy and Asthma Center of Duncanville TX. She was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal. She’s the middle child among three siblings. Fernanda and her siblings grow up living with their mother. She lost her father at an early age. A few years before her father died, she witnessed that her mother was being abused. Her mother never complained about her abusive father, and she was still submissive to him (Fernanda’s father). She works out daily, maintains a healthy diet and looks really beautiful for her age. Psychodynamic is defined as an approach that focuses on how internal process motivate human behavior (page564 Cite textbook). A research done by Hutchison links between early life experiences and physical mental health risk (Hutchinson 2015). An early life event she witnessed (father abusing her mother) had a huge impact on Fernanda, mentally she accepted that behavior as well since her mother never complained
Drive or instinct Theory- The theory that proposes that human behavior is motivated by instinct: Thanatos, or the drive for aggression or destruction, and Eros, or the drive for life (Hutchinson 2015). In Fernanda’s case, leaving her marriage was not an easy task. Her instincts made her believe that violence was pattern for her. She feared that she wouldn’t be able to return back to her family in Portugal and be accepted without being judged.

The main clue of the humanistic perspective is growth, personal meaning, competence, dignity, worth, and unique (Hutchinson 2015). Before we discussed anything under this perspective let’s look at Maslow Hierarchy of needs; the needs suggest that higher needs cannot emerge in full motivation force until lower needs have been at least partially satisfied (Hutchinson 2015) The types of needs are presented below
Fernanda’s Physiological needs were provided by her husband. He brought her from Portuguese, made sure she got her immigration status taken care of and provided for basic needs. However, her safety and esteem needs were not met, she took matters into her own hands by asking for a divorce. Divorcing her husband will help her break from anxiety, depression and emotional distress. Fernanda reaching her limit of the abuse enlightened her to seek help by honoring her invitation from her community counselor. Concluding that Fernanda wanted to be free from her abusive relationship, she decided to take a leap of faith by sneaking out to attend the community group to empower and get support from other women going through the same abusive marriage. This shows that, having a support system and seeking help enables a person to break free from their challenges. She noticed herself worth and believe she can support herself by standing up for what is
