Now we just have to find a way to bring the community back into good policing because, good officers deserve…
The Police Officers that are on city streets serve a dual role, they are the first line of defense for citizens as well as the first encounter that people as their liberties are limited and they enter the criminal justice system. If police officers are more properly vetted, to ensure that they will be a part of the solution and not a further level of the problem they would gain more trust from the people they are sworn to serve. The second vital thing that must happen is a more thorough training program for officers so that they are able to more readily identify if the people they encounter are mentally well or not. If they are able to more readily identify the mental stability of offenders this stands to mitigate further conflict between themselves and the person of…

In conclusion, many issues surround the U.S.-Mexico Border Patrol. The physical and emotional abuse that immigrants experience is one of the issues because there are many complaints against the Border Patrol that claim that some agents sexually abuse the immigrant women. Additionally, many children said they were physically and emotionally abused by Border Patrols when they were in their custody. Second, the use of lethal force is also another issue because the Border Patrol does not know when it is appropriate to use such force. Thirdly, the Border Patrol has caused harm to the environment because the Border Patrol agents have turned it into a war zone due to drug and human traffickers.…
On September 11, 2001, one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in United States history took place. After the planes had collided with the Twin Towers, the masses of the United States of America suddenly was hit with anxiety and concern. America was prepared to lose their confidentiality in exchange for refuge from whatever dangers may follow in the future. When the Homeland Security Act, was passed in 2002 by President Bush, It showed how much the American people favored the constant surveillance by the government than the danger of being in harm's way. H.L. Mencken, an American essayist, and social critic wrote, “The average man does not want to be free.…
Blue Lives Matters is a movement made to damage control for police officers. With technology being more accessible we are seeing more of the police brutality that we normally would not have seen. Coates is successful in at bridging the gap by showing that police violence is the result of an ignorant society. The task of trying to better the police is a complex idea and will not be something that can be fixed overnight.…
The world we live in today is one to be disappointed about in the aspect of America’s law enforcement. Early law enforcement was introduced in the 1800’s in Great Britain. Originally established with the same traits as its military, their purpose was one of great value which involved serving and protecting the people at any cost with a civilized and humane approach. America had since then adopted the law enforcement structure from Great Britain, but ultimately warped the structure into that of their own. The war on drugs in the late 70’s was a huge influence in the decision to push for a more militarized law enforcement; and now we are where we are, America’s policing is structured in a way that was thought to be even more beneficial for the…
In today’s time the biggest trend watching news or articles online that deal with police brutality, and how the police is abusing their power as an officer. Police are here to protect us and making us feel safe, but the things that are going around the news and article are only making things worse by making the people fear the police. Cops should be trained to handle a response better rather than take their anger out or think that they can do anything just because they work for the law. The good thing is that many people are uniting together to fight over police brutality and making a difference to over throw the ones who abuse their power, letting the better cops who knows when to use their power for good or very difficult situations. Police brutality is become a bigger to the people who don’t…
Over 18,000 agencies have reported fatal shootings last year (Kindy 4). Police are shooting left and right no matter the race or the gender they are shooting. "The average age of a person killed by police in 2015 was 37" (Swaine 3). This is showing us that police may be killing innocent people like those people may have families and children. Usually people in their thirties are just new to starting families are already have a family but that may be taken away because of the police.…
I think that we do have it right in terms of how we work with the community, and try to prevent crime happening before it happens. A good example of this would be the D.A.R.E. program, which is intended to teach the young and upcoming generation about drug use, and how detrimental it can be to their lives, and their community. I think that if we can continue to have a proactive approach on crime, instead of wait for it to happen, will benefit us in a few ways. Firstly, with the use of similar programs like D.A.R.E. we as future police officers can develop a more positive relationship with society, instead of only dealing with them when trouble arises. If the community continues to see police actively trying to build relationships that benefit not only them, but the lives of police, I think that there is a possibility that the era can progress into what it was intended…
Use of Force Paper What is use of force in police work; well for one thing it is unescapable and goes hand in hand with doing your job as a police officer. In many situations the lives of ordinary people and officers can be taken if use of force is not used properly or when necessary. There are so many different scenarios that can come into play when an officer decides to use force. Also they have to think about is it justified, have they had the proper training and is the department going to cover my butt or be held liable. There is no single, completely agreed-upon definition of use of force.…
Community Era American law enforcement came under heavy scrutiny in the 1960s and 1970s. As a result of the police response to civil rights demonstrations, racial strife, Vietnam War protests and political dissent, the Lyndon Johnson administration organized the President’s Crime Commission to examine policing methods and practices (Peak, 2009). This group was tasked with finding solutions to crime, including the root causes, examining the methods of the justice system and solving the combative relationship between police and civilians. The recommendations of the committee included many aspects of law enforcement seen today; the hiring of more minority officers to improve police-community interactions, rigorous screening of applicants, providing intensive preservice academies and the recruitment of college educated candidates (Peak, 2009). The findings and recommendations of the President’s Crime Commission slowly created doubt as to the effectiveness of the reform era style bureaucratic and centralized methods of policing (Fyfe 1997).…
Being a police officer comes with great responsibilities. They are expected to maintain law and order, protect the lives of citizens, reduce fear of crime and most importantly prevent crime. But in the past few years, it seems as if they’re the ones putting fellow citizens in fear. Police brutality isn’t a topic you frequently hear about, but the times we do it’s nothing short of a serious problem. I’m not sure if it’s to do with race or just about the law enforcement agencies believing they can abuse the power that is a privilege to them.…
These traditional police-performance markers are likely not the best way to evaluate a community policing performance (Trojanowicz & Bucqueroux, 1992). Being proactive is important for community policing: law enforcement that uses community policing attempt to act on social problems before a crime has been committed. Traditional policing is known to be more reactive, whereby law enforcement respond when a crime has happened. When law enforcement does not address larger community problems, they will continue to have issues achieving their goals. The New York police discovered a connection between crime and disorder, understanding that drunks, gamblers, and sex workers can create environments that are likely to involve violence.…
Hello, I’m Levi Musson. I am currently a junior studying law and society with a minor in forensics as well as OLS. I decided that I wanted to go into the field of law and society because I wanted to go into law enforcement. When I think about law enforcement I feel that there are a lot of rewards that can come from working in this field. I feel that I will be able to make a positive impact on some of the youth and hopefully steer them in the right direction as they grow to adulthood.…
