In this module, we have discussed a few eras of policing: The political era, reform era, and the community era. Throughout Canadian history each of them have their place, and pro’s and con’s to each. Before I get into these benefits and disadvantages, I want to provide a brief history of each:
The first era I want to address is the political era. This era of policing (1840–1930) was characterized by police officers seeking an intimate relationship with the community and politics greatly influencing the police and how they went about their practices. The police had limited access to technology during this time, so much of their …show more content…
I believe that we are being steered into the right direction, however I can see a few things that may not work heading into the future. Typically there is a rather negative stigma placed on police now, in light of the controversial actions taken by police in the Rodney King case in Los Angeles, and the Michael brown case in Ferguson, Missouri. I am not going to argue the merits of the actions taken by the police in this paper, however I do want to state that, because of instances like these, and I can see why a large portion of the population is not in support of the police. Even though these events took place in the United States of America, the same stigma has travelled worldwide, and is very prevalent in Canadian culture. Not only that, but due to previous eras of policing, we have much ground to recover if we have any hope of discovering the relationship we need with society to make this era work. I think that we do have it right in terms of how we work with the community, and try to prevent crime happening before it happens. A good example of this would be the D.A.R.E. program, which is intended to teach the young and upcoming generation about drug use, and how detrimental it can be to their lives, and their community. I think that if we can continue to have a proactive approach on crime, instead of wait for it to happen, will benefit us in a few ways. Firstly, with the use of similar programs like D.A.R.E. we as future police officers can develop a more positive relationship with society, instead of only dealing with them when trouble arises. If the community continues to see police actively trying to build relationships that benefit not only them, but the lives of police, I think that there is a possibility that the era can progress into what it was intended
