Recently, students assigned to SWRK 630 were given the task to select a current piece of proposed KY legislation that is of interest to the field of study and the social work profession. Students were also told to use the information from Schneider and Jansson’s books, choose pertinent information from reliable sources and develop a fact sheet on the positive effects of this proposed legislation on rural Kentuckians. Subsequently, this assignment revealed the effects of the legislation process on rural Kentuckians. Throughout the practicum, students are repeatedly reminded about the significance of policy and how it relates to social services and the population it serves.
Policy Practice aids practicum students/social workers with practice that involves the formulation, adoption, implementation and evaluation of all types of social service and social welfare policies. The University of Connecticut website states, “Typical Policy Practice activities include defining social problems, assessing needs, developing and implementing programs and forecasting future problems, needs, policies and programs. Policy Practice involves designing, implementing and evaluating programs involving a range of clients and citizens, with special emphasis on oppressed individuals and groups” (2016). The website also suggest, “A critical element of Policy Practice is the ability to leverage the sources, allocation and mechanisms of transfer of resources and money for social service programs. Grant writing is a special skill needed by Policy Practitioners” (2016). The assignment proves relevant since the practicum site Department of Community Based Services (DCBS) provide service for a diverse population that relies on the legislations implemented by those selected to represent rural Kentuckians. Engaging in policy and being knowledgeable about the legislation process expands the students’ awareness and the value of this competency and exactly how it relates to social work. Rural Kentucky communities are composed of various ethnicities and religious affiliation which have led to the need to incorporate cultural competency/diversity in the state legislation, federal statutes and programs, private sector organization and academic settings. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the agency, client, and social worker that learning about

The challenges faced at the practicum site is derived from being absent for a long period. Gaining a master’s degree in social work is just the start in forging your career as a social worker. A master’s degree proves you've met the educational requirements. However, the needed skills, knowledge, and training requirements are gained through internship such as the practicum assignment at DCBS.
Prior to maternity leave the assignment at DCBS led to being a member of the on-going team two. Team two conducts ongoing investigation, home visits, help the client develop treatment plans, facilitate supervised visits between parents/child, visits clients currently detained, file court petitions for Terminate Parental Rights (TPR), link clients to community resources, submit client referrals, and requesting a random drug screen from the clients. Being a part of these scenarios provided the needed experience that will develop new skillsets while improving the old ones as the goal to be an effective social worker is established.
During the practicum, positive feedbacks that were task specific was given by the task supervisor and SSC with regards to the supervised visits I’ve conducted and the typing of contact

Social work is relatively new and is still growing. Social work literature evolves as societies grow and evolve. I have noticed that several text books are third, fourth, and even higher editions, connoting regular change and updates designed to better fit current social work. Policies and programs is a two-part core requirement course, this course fits in well with the genres due to the fact that without policies and programs we wouldn’t have a framework in which to create the goals that fit our specific area of expertise. Classes that aren’t requirements enhance the ability of students to study appropriate genres within our community.…

Introduction Child welfare is facing rapid transitions and changes both in Ontario and in Canada at large. The arena is currently in need of developing a healthy relationship between the worker, the client, family and the community the client belongs to (Platt, 2008). According to Zastrow, these eight skills include: engaging clients in a working relationship, identifying the issues, problems needs and resources, collecting information, planning for services, using their communication skills, implementing interventions, apply knowledge, and evaluating the outcomes of everything that they do (2010, p. 67). In my opinion, out of the eight skills, being able to communicate with a client is the most important skill for a social worker to have. A social worker needs to be able to work with different types of people both young and old, and it is important that they can communicate well with them. If they cannot communicate with their client then they won’t be able to determine what their problems are or how to solve them. They need to know how to show their clients empathy and talk to them like they are important.…
