Like other people Wade knows the world is awful, but the Oasis is the people's utopia. In the Oasis people know that it is all virtual reality but treat it as if it were real. In this universe the people in reality have their true identities hidden from everyone else in the Oasis unless of course they want people to know who they are; they are more than welcomed to share their identity. In the Oasis people are free to have their online character look and act like whatever they want. The varieties are endless, many people pour money into their characters constantly striving to be an original individual. Not only is each character free to look how they want, they also can go wherever they like. In the Oasis anywhere and everywhere are available to all the online servers. Information is also a great asset to people in this game, if someone wants to find or learn about something they can search whatever it may be up, and the knowledge is theirs for the taking. Wade shares with the reader that his generation has never known the world without the Oasis and states “We were born into an ugly world and the Oasis was our one happy refuge”(chapter 2-3). Gunters are people who dedicate their time to break down anything and everything related to Halliday’s life. They hunt down old 80’s references from the fashion, movies, video games, and even old TV commercials. Another opponent in the competition is the Sixers. The Sixers are what the reader will discover to be the bad guy of the story. They’re an organisation of people who all look the same and use very sketchy or cheating like tactics to try to find the Egg. Once Wade has discovered/conquered the first gate and key, the Sixers reach out to him making him several offers for him to join them. However Wade tells the reader ahead of time that the Sixers want to take over the Oasis and ruin it for everyone except the wealthy; which would be very unfair, because poverty is a big issue in this time era. After Wade has listened to each tempting offer, he declines. The Sixers enraged, decide to share with Wade that they know who he his and where he lives. They then threaten to blow up his home in the stacks. Wade knowing that he is safe in his hideout and believing that they are bluffing declines again. In moments his home is blown up and the Sixers soon after find the first gate. It is now up to Wade and the other top four members of the scoreboard to get to the Egg before the Sixers do.
