Ponyboy and Johnny were both in the same gang growing up. One night, they were being beat up and someone was drowning Ponyboy. Johnny, acting in self defense, killed the boy with a switchblade to save Ponyboy. Instead of turning themselves in, they ran away to an old church in the country, where no one would find them-until one day when the church caught on fire. There were four or five children that had wandered away from their group to wind up stuck inside a burning church. Their teachers thought that they were lost until they heard screams coming from inside the old church. Johnny and Ponyboy decided, without a doubt, that they would have to help them.
Ponyboy and Johnny ran into the burning church to try to save the kids. They found five children, about eight years old or younger, huddled in a corner. They started to pick up the kids and get them out of the window, while the church was quickly burning down. They got all of the kids and Ponyboy safely out, but the church fell on Johnny right as he got out. While Ponyboy only passed out, Johnny had fatal injuries.
Ponyboy and Johnny put both of their lives in danger when they ran inside of that burning church. They never thought about their decision when they were about to die, but they just continued to pick up the children and get them out.
