In 2013, 2014, and 2015 the crime in Fairfax county were 41,704, 38,56, and 38,306 respectively (Crime statistics, p. 12, 2015). This 7.5 percent decline in 2014, and 0.66 percent decline in 2015 will make the demand for law enforcement to shift to the left. As residence in the county continue to comply with the law and demand of law enforcement will continue to decline at the same time. On the other hand, Chicago’s annual crime report shows for 2009, and 2010 at 155,539, and 152,031 respectively (Crime statistics, p.14, 2010). Each police officer has to be trained in police academy before joining any law enforcement. In order to become a police officer, one have to pass hours of background checks, tests, and obstacles. For example, “self-completion of Applicant Initial Screening Guide (1 Hour), Polygraph – (3 hours), Psychological exam – (8 hours), Physical abilities test – (3 hours), Background interview – (4 hours), Medical exam – (4 hours), and Entire background investigation – (8 – 12 weeks). Prior to attending the academy, applicants should be able to perform 25 pushups, 30 sit-ups and run 1.5 miles” (Police officer, 2016). All this training come with a price tag for each officer. If the price of training officers increase, there will be lower supply.
In order to lower the price police officers, go to high schools to inform students about law enforcement careers and opportunities. Now a day, many public high schools provide an elective criminal justice course for students who are interested in joining law enforcement after high school or college. Having this option on a high school level will give an opportunity for students who are undecided in their major to consider criminal justice careers.
