A police officer’s job is to protect and serve, control the public order, and help prevent and detect a crime. The duties of police officers, also known as cops, have changed over time yet have always been to protect and serve the community. The cops in today’s society have a mission which is to enforce the rules of conduct and the law. Of course, this mission can also be very dangerous for the officer and their families. These thoughts are all a part of the stress and complications that come with the job as a cop and most cops are trained to deal with this stress. Scott Nyhart, age 51, is a police officer in the Haverford Township District. He has been a cop for over 24 years now. He is a Patrol officer and will be on a new team starting …show more content…
You start off as a patrol office then you can move up to sergeant, lieutenant, and lastly chief. Some townships have detectives and that go undercover as well. “In my department we have people that go undercover,” said Nyhart. “The main people that go undercover are in the narcotics department for our township.” Narcotics department is all about solving crimes with drug related problems. According to Nyhart, Haverford Township see mostly people with a heroine problem and it usually occurs around 5am. We also usually get the occasional person on PCP or have someone with possession of marijuana yet the biggest problem is mostly …show more content…
He also stated that when you go into this field just know that you can 't hide anything. “They interview my family and friends and even my ex wives,” stated Nyhart. “You then have to go do a polygraph test and then a psychology evaluation.” The psychology test is probably the funniest part because they ask you the craziest questions and basically evaluate you like you are a mental health patient, well thats the one I got at least, said Nyhart. The polygraph is basically to see if you have done any drugs and have any in your system. Nyhart suggested if you wanna go into this field then don 't smoke marijuana or do drugs and if you do stop now. Currently, the number of qualified people is greater then the amount of job openings available which is resulting in higher standards for employment and more selectivity by the townships. Pursuing a career in law enforcement is probably one of the most rewarding and stable conditions available because of the way are society is today, stated Nyhart.
