Cambodia was mostly an agricultural country, however Pol Pot decided it should be a completely agricultural country. This forced people from towns and cities to move to the countryside. People were pressured to work very long hours to grow extra rice, due to Pol Pot deciding that the agricultural output should double in 4 years. If anyone was caught taking part of religious rituals/services they would have been executed. Thousands of Buddhists, Muslims and Christians were killed for practicing their beliefs. Family members would also be put to death for communicating with each other, if it wasn’t permitted by the state. Even married couples were only allowed to visit each other on a limited basis. Family members were relocated into different parts of Cambodia, with no way to contact anyone from within their families. Nearly all privacy was abolished during the Khmer Rouge era. Cambodian’s weren’t even allowed to eat in privacy, but instead they had to eat with a group of other people.
The Khmer Rouge murdered anyone for anything they could think of. Even people who could speak a foreign language, wore glasses, and caught for being ‘lazy’ were executed. Pol Pot was so afraid of losing power and having people betray him, that he executed anyone who was slightly suspected of disloyality or caused disruption.
