The world is surrounded by questions that people want answers to. They search for something that makes sense to them. Socrates chose to teach the world and his students. He focused on education and what it truly meant to be educated. Education was thought to be what was taught in the school, but through the views of Socrates he told the people that education started when humans were young and not when they entered schooling. Socrates talks about how human are educated even if they never go to school. Human are trained through their experiences. People are born into families that then begin the process of education. It begins with what they listen to and what they watch. Parents will play music, read stories or share experiences to their children that can affect how the child thinks and acts. “That education in music and fine arts is most potent, because by this chiefly rhythm and harmony sink into the inmost part of the soul.” (Pg. 231) Music is a way Socrates describes how the outside world can affect the human being. Music is heard all around the world. Parents play music they have always listened to or unfiltered songs are played on the radio and the children hear the words. Music cannot be avoided. Plato tells the world that there will always be things that can’t be avoided and those ideas that make it through the filters are part of education. “Thus, the guardians ' education is primarily moral in nature, emphasizing the blind acceptance of beliefs and behaviors rather than the ability to think critically and independently.” (Dillon) People start to accept their knowledge without challenging what they hear. Through our education, Socrates discusses how what we are taught determines the position we hold. There will be people who stand out and want to lead. They are people born to be the boss. “If there arose one man in it among the rulers distinguished above the rest it would be called a kingdom.” Socrates shows that there will be people who lead, but they shouldn’t lead because of money, but because they want to the help the people they control. He talks about how our leaders shouldn’t be controlled by money, but should want to lead. In other words Plato describes a country where people have different jobs, but are equal.“All who possess the status are equal with respect to the rights and duties with which the status it endowed.” (Marshall) Their standing is different; they have different responsibilities, but are equal. Every person is needed in order to have a society. It becomes a well oiled machine that works perfectly and your education determines what you’ll be. People learn and it becomes who they are.
