I have experienced this situation throughout my high school. I always see girls in cliques or small groups where they have confidence in stating their opinions. These behaviors correlate with the type of response that men and women give in classroom discussions. They represent totally different ways of expressing a person’s opinion. Tannen describes in her article, “Many women bond by talking about the troubles, and many men bond by exchanging playful insults and put-downs, and other thoughts of verbal sparring” (346). My male friends tease one another and are never afraid to give opinion about others and say what is on their mind; however, I see girls at school crowded around and talking privately about their problems.
