The Pi that was heartbroken about killing a fish is shown with this quote: “Tears flowing down my cheeks, I edged myself on until I heard a cracking sound and I no longer felt any life fighting beneath my hands.”(Martel 203). This Pi is soon replaced with a hardened more ruthless version of himself. He starts to resemble the hyena, one who does not hesitate to kill for food and can dismember and eat an animal without a second thought. Throughout the novel Pi seems to live with the motto that when there are desperate times you need to take desperate measures. At this point he is so hungry he will eat anything, such as Richard Parker’s waste. It is evident that Pi is developing into a more savage like nature or the savage side of him has been given the opportunity to make an appearance. Hyenas have been known to eat parts off of their own species. This cannibalistic behavior is also resembled by Pi: “I will further confess that, driven by the extremity of my need and the madness to which it pushed me, I ate some of his flesh”(Martel 284).
