Persuasive Speech Outline

Topic: Blood Donation

Purpose: To persuade my peers of the need for blood donations.

Thesis: The need for blood donors is crucial it could save a life of someone you know or your own.

Introduction:

A. Imagine you or someone you know needed blood to save their life. For example, if you were born with a heart defect and required a transfusion for a chance at life. What if there was no blood available? Well for instance, my niece was born with a rare blood disorder called ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) to which her body kills off her own platelets. 1. People of all ages, may require transfusions to replace blood lost during surgeries, accidents, internal bleeding problems, or to treat their illnesses. 2. According to an article written in USA Today in 2009, 69 million people in the U.S. suffer from various forms of diseases, such as Sickle-cell, Leukemia, are in need of transplants or are born with some birth defect. a. Many of these people are alive today because of people who donate their blood and get a second chance at life. b. This is why it is important to donate blood.
(Transition: Now that we know the problem, let us move on to “How to donate”.) II. First, I want you to understand the process of giving and then donate. A. The American Red Cross outlines a simple and painless process of giving blood and I would like to share that with you. 1. First, you must meet certain criteria’s to donate. a. A person must be at least 17, weigh about 100 pounds, and be in good health. b. If anyone feels that their blood is contaminated they should not donate because it could harm another person. 2. If you meet these terms and would like to donate, visit your local chapter of The American Red Cross in your community. a. You will be asked your health history, and then if you pass that you can donate. b. A technician will then clean the area to which the blood is to be drawn, then insert the needle and begin to draw your blood. c. It only take between 7 and 10
