I was soon pulled out of my thoughts as the teacher called me over to talk in the hallway. I quickly obeyed her instructions and followed her, where I would receive one of the most devastating talks of my academic career. She looked down at me with this expression that I didn't know what it had meant at the time, but looking back on it, it was one of pure racism. "I think the school put you in my class as a mistake. You see, I offer harder math and reading than what you would be used to. Maybe you and your mommy and daddy should consider a new class for you." As she said this, she handed me a sheet of green paper that contained information about ESL classes. I was confused as to why she would give me this paper when I was the brightest in my second-grade class and was specifically put in her class. After she sent me back inside, I took the paper, balled it up, and threw it in the trash.
