He once said “Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Because of his strong beliefs of equality paired with the great importance he placed on peace, he was able to lead his historic march on Washington. His protests were effective in time and resulted in the end of segregation. African Americans still face injustice to this day, Black Lives Matter is a movement started in July of 2013 after the death of seventeen year old Trayvon Martin. King’s protests were more effective than the ones seen today. His emphasis on peace demanded respect from even his enemies. Many modern protests have become a dangerous scene where blood is shed and a trail of disaster is left on its setting. King once said “Darkness cannot fight out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Fighting racism and hatred with violence is ineffective. It only gives your enemies ammunition to slander your cause. It is ridiculous how conservatives invalidate blatant racism in our country. Spewing back things like “all lives matter” or “blue lives matter” when those people don’t need to be advocated for. Black Lives Matter does not seek to invalidate other lives they are only searching for a sense of love, belonging and equality that all humans should receive without a fight or protest. An example of an area where American privileges are not allowed is in 1989. In the 1989 the Tiananmen square protests in Beijing, China protesters seeking a democratic government were peacefully protesting in Beijing when soldiers opened fire on crowds, killing an unknown number of protestors. Many of whom were students. The death toll is estimated from 200-10,000 people. The Chinese government still does not acknowledge the killings and they still censor information from their citizens. Americans fought for the right to express their distaste in government policies that are seen as unjust. While protesting for these rights worked in American democracy, in China, these protests aren’t even written in history. This is an important protest as well, creating the infamous Tiananmen Square picture of a man in front of a line of tanks that several can recognize, with this image sparking many protests in other places around the world. These protests further proved that protesting does not in fact improve quality of life, as the student protests ended up harming life more than help with the death toll so
