Failure
In the beginning of the chapter, Nurse Ratched tries to make the other patients turn on McMurphy by posting their financial statements, and showing that while all the other patient’s money is dwindling, McMurphy’s money has remained the same. This draws skepticism and has the patients begin to think that McMurphy has never lost his con-man ways. Later on, McMurphy asks Bromden, in order to measure Bromden’s increased strength, if he can move the control panel, and Bromden does move it a foot and a half. Bromden refuses to accept the five dollars that McMurphy offers him for moving it, saying that it is sketch that McMurphy keeps winning things. Later on, Ratched orders everyone cleaned because they had become “dirty” from the fishing trip, but Goerge, who has a phobia of being clean …show more content…
Bromden and McMurphy attempt to defend Goerge but are later sent to the disturbed. McMurphy is then told by Nurse Ratched that he could avoid electroshock therapy if he simply admitted he was wrong, but McMurphy would do no such thing, and both Bromden and McMurphy receive electroshock therapy. This therapy actually helps Bromden and for the first time clears the fog in his head, but it has adverse effects McMurphy and Bromden is able to notice even though McMurphy hides it. Bromden is not subject to anymore treatment thanks to his recovery but McMurphy is treated three more times. Eventually Nurse Ratched decides to bring Bromden and McMurphy back from the disturbed ward realizing that they are becoming martyrs for the other patients. When McMurphy is returned to the normal ward, he is urged to escape by his fellow patients who say he will be hurt more by Nurse Ratched if he doesn’t. McMurphy calmly reminds them that Billy has a date
