Overall, Religion 106: What is Belief? has been extremely eye-opening and enriching. I have learned plenty about different beliefs and tolerance and have found many answers to questions I have asked myself for a long time. In my opinion, I engaged very well with all of the course-work as well as all of the texts that we read as a class. If I had to give myself a grade out of forty points, I think I would give myself a thirty-five. I think that this number of points best represents my learning performance in this course for a number of reasons. The first reason is because I did all of the readings assigned and took each one into consideration and analyzed them in my own way, which is what the course asked of us as students. The next reason I …show more content…
Belief allows people to experience and accept many different things around them that may confuse or frighten them. If anything, this class has taught me that belief is necessary for a functioning society; it allows people to lean on something when times are rough. In my opinion, belief is very similar now to how it was in the past. Whereas in the past many people used belief as an explanation for things that they could not prove otherwise, nowadays there is more scientific proof for many things such as sickness, death, natural disasters, etc. I think that now people feel less obligated to hold on to their religious beliefs, but they do so anyway in order to keep their traditions and familial roots in tact. In terms of other beliefs and superstitions, people believe many of the same things they believed thousands of years ago. Many beliefs that people have now derive from ancient superstitions and folklores. This course allowed me to think more and more about different types of beliefs, especially non-religious ones. In the past, my thoughts on belief only regarded religion because I was so unaware of how many different types of beliefs there are. I have learned through this course that people believe in art, medicine, sports, miracles and monsters among many other things. People in the modern era can truly express their beliefs in any way they would like to, whether that is through art, social

Throughout the semester as a class we have read multiple forms of readings varying in style and meaning. The different types of readings were meant to enrich our minds of knowledge and shape our human experience. After reading some of the forms of literature, such as Walden and Civil Disobedience, A year of Magical Thinking and the Auto Biography of an Ex-Colored Man my mind has expanded to consider different parts of life. I think about the way I live my life and the things I do as a human being. The course as a whole has allowed me to expand my mind, think about different parts of life and nature that I would not pay attention to on a daily basis.…

In today’s society we have all encountered a numerous amount of people who practice religions that are completely different than our own. Religion is often a topic most people tend to shy away from during social events and interactions. I believe people shy away from this topic because they are afraid to step outside of their comfort zone and become interested in a religion that they were raised to practice. With over half of the United States population claiming Christianity as their religion of choice I believe people feel that it is unimportant to gain knowledge about any other religious beliefs. For me that is not true, although Christianity is leading religion in the US I believe that is important to be knowledgeable about religions that…

I also started to attend a religious place of worship, however because of our cultural differences, my place of worship is a temple rather than a church. I was initially exposed to temple by going to public service events by being forced to go with my parents. However, as time went on I grew up and decided to attend the weekly worships on Sunday, just like Pete.…

I feel like most of my beliefs are extremely old fashioned especially when it comes to relationships, the way we dress, and technology. The majority of my beliefs about my relationships stem from being raised in the south and being a southern Baptist. I feel that a man should lead his family in all things, especially when it comes to religion. Also, because of my southern Baptist raising or spiritual beliefs, I am strongly against having sex before marriage. I feel like it is something that is special and should be saved once you have fully committed yourself to someone and have become one with them.…

Grade D Assignment Belief, such a strong word to describe ones self-perception. Belief to me is structuring one’s own perception to seek accuracy for self understanding, but one’s beliefs system is learned. A person’s belief system is learned because for me, I would not believe in what I believe in if it wasn 't for the social and cultural environment I was raised upon. The social and cultural environment shapes my perspective on how I view what is right from wrong, how I see what normal and what is seen as taboo to me. This perception of belief has created an understanding on the criminal justice system for myself.…

This book offers a look at how the principles of the Christian worldview compares with five major competing worldviews of our day: Islam, Secularism, Marxism, New Spirituality, and Postmodernism. Christianity is the most popular religion in America, and shortly after that is Mormonism. These two religions are both grounded in knowing who Jesus is, and the basic fundamentals of the Bible. Although both of these religions claim to be Christians or a form of Christian, Mormons definitely have their own take on how things happened and what they think to be true. I grew up learning a tremendous amount about both of these. I am a grounded Christian believer, with a very broadened knowledge on Mormonism.…

When he was a prisoner of war he was always tortured by the Japanese guards and especially by Mutsuhiro Watanabe, the bird, who was the commander. A well-taught class is one that provides you with proper knowledge on the subject, while simultaneously putting the subject matter in the larger context of a shared history and current affairs. For centuries religion has been in conversation with almost every academic pursuit created by man. Naturally, the argument of how religion should be taught in schools is part of the argument on the best way for American students to be taught, as it should be. Currently, public schools, especially secondary schools, are merely ignoring religion altogether and have silently agreed to keep it largely outside of academic conversation. However, ignoring religion is a fruitless effort that negatively affects students.…
