Southern Baptist Reflection

Superior Essays
I feel like most of my beliefs are extremely old fashioned especially when it comes to relationships, the way we dress, and technology. The majority of my beliefs about my relationships stem from being raised in the south and being a southern Baptist. I feel that a man should lead his family in all things, especially when it comes to religion. Also, because of my southern Baptist raising or spiritual beliefs, I am strongly against having sex before marriage. I feel like it is something that is special and should be saved once you have fully committed yourself to someone and have become one with them. I also feel that the majority of us as women dress way to risqué and we need to respect ourselves in the way we dress before we can ever expect …show more content…
This class has helped me realize that we indeed do live in a very religious part of the world and that just about everyone claims to be Christian. I knew that was true because I am from a small town in Alabama so everyone just about goes to church on at least Easter and Christmas and still claims to be Christian. I did not realize how very religious the south actually is until we talked about it in this class. This class also showed me that there are varying numbers of people that claim to be religious but actually are not. I cannot say that I am perfect, but most Sundays I either go to church or at least watch it online. I do realize that still does not make me a better Christian than the next person, but I am still trying to acquire truth spoken into my life. Also a realization that I have had from this class and since coming to college last year is how many people have been sucked into religion. There are those people who just go to church to be seen not to have an actual relationship with God, which is the whole point of religion to have something to have faith in. When it comes to how this class has challenged me to figure out why I believe what I believe it mostly comes from me being a southern Baptist. Such as, that I am against women leading the church, and the fact that I am against sex before marriage and divorce for any other reason aside from adultery. This class helped me realize that it is acceptable to agree with your parents’ beliefs, but it is also passable to not. This can be seen when it comes to gay relationships I do agree that it is a sin, but I also do believe that all sins are the same in God’s eyes and that everyone should be able to love who they want to. Overall, this class has

Most Christians have at times experienced a “crisis of faith” due to new contrasting ideals that may provoke questions (Carroll, 409). Entering college for the first time is a vulnerable time for anyone who has been brought up all their life to think and believe as they are told. College freshman, Alfred Corn, was experiencing this unfortunate crisis. (Carroll, 409) The knowledge we individually obtain throughout our livelihood constantly evolves and adapts to new information and experiences, unfortunately learning too much at times makes us question our current standing beliefs.…

Making a change in the world for the health care provided to Jehovah’s Witnesses didn’t become so personal until recently. My cousin who is a Jehovah’s Witness as well passed away last month after being put on the waiting list for liver transplant. She got sick two weeks before, but really didn’t think anything of it until she started having sharp stomach pain and was having trouble walking. She and her husband went to the hospital that night, there they tried to give her a blood transfusion, but since we do not accept blood as Jehovah’s Witnesses she refused to take it. The hospital they were at in Austin couldn’t assist her any further so they transferred her to the hospital down here in Katy where things started to take a turn for the worse.…

I, too, had to take classes on all of these topics while I was growing up. One difference is that I did not go to a christian school, I went to a public school so I was not forced to learn about christianity. Although, I did notice that many teachers just assume that most students know about Christianity. I had the option to take bible class but it was no interest to me. I regret not learning more about Christianity because…

My personal narrative essay is about my transfer from Bible Baptist to Savannah Christian and my feelings towards the process of transferring and the first day at Savannah Christian. Overall the transfer was better than I presumed it would be because I sustained a better education than I did at Bible Baptist. The transfer taught me that sometimes change is for the greater good. If I had the ability to go back in time and tell my future self-something about this situation it would be not to be nervous just breathe. Finding out I was going to a new school could be compared to when I found out my first fish had died, heartbreaking.…

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price, therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). I really love this verse because it helps me be healthier and helps me be purer for the Holy Spirit. We need to treat our bodies like temples, eating junk food and fast food will only hurt your body. Houston Baptist has only Chickfila as a source of food on campus.…

In the early American South religion was decided by the region you resided in, race, family status, and upbringing. Rich or poor, black or white, inner city or country, all played a role in the segregation of churches. Religion was extremely conservative and shaped the lives of the South. Regional religion allowed for Native Americans, Africans, and Americans to practice their individual beliefs. Slavery in the South was rooted in religion; the different denominations read from the same book and interpreted it in such a way to fit their lifestyles.…

Teachers take their own time to invest in the students. They pray each class, and always are open to hearing prayer requests. Furthermore, all classes have a biblical foundation. No matter what major a child is enrolled in, professors always teach how to incorporate a student’s faith into whatever area of life they are going into. Despite the strong Christian foundation that is provided with a Christian college, the public, more “secular” colleges still provide academic rigor yet lacks moral competence.…

And I didn't know it was the worst until I had Mrs. Halstead’s class. And let me tell you it basically made me feel like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Because what she talked about often was surrounded by the Catholic’s teachings on abstinence, sexuality, abortion, euthanasia, etc. and with sexuality comes talk about homosexuality. And considering I was still trying to figure out if I really was gay, the discussion surrounding how people in the LGBTQ community are mentally ill and are committing a sin didn't help.…

There are many philosophers that I find to be important, I personally believe that Socrates is the best. Just for the simple fact that he believe all the way until his death that he knew nothing. Only a truly enlightened person will fully admit that they truly know nothing. The text from the book called it “Socrates ignorance”. (Palmer, 30) I find that in my own personal philosophy I fully admit that I know nothing, but I am will to help anyone find out what the answer may be.…

Starting off this class with reading what Family Ministry is defined as opened up my view on how Family Ministry can be diverse in a variety of understanding. Diana Garland stated that “family ministry is any activity that directly or indirectly (1) forms families in the congregation community; (2) increases the Christlikeness of the family relationships of Christians; or (3) equips and supports families for the work to which they are called together.” Earlier in the reading she stated that “The flurry of programs called family ministry is the fear that Christian families are falling apart and need churches to strengthen and support them.” Diana Garland’s definition is what I strive for in ministry and I believe that she also is aware…
