Persuasive Essay On Religion

Religion was the third value that was a key to the success of Louie. Louie went through many things. A couple of things he went through were: many attacks by the Japanese when he was in the Air corps, being stranded in the ocean for forty seven days, and being a prisoner of war at Ofuna, Omori, and Naoetsu for two years. When he was a prisoner of war he was always tortured by the Japanese guards and especially by Mutsuhiro Watanabe, the bird, who was the commander. They injected Louie with the dengue fever several times to see how much his body could take and he slept with maggots. The bird beat him all the time and he ended up leaving him death in one ear. Louie wasn’t very religious. He would only go to church as a younger boy with his family and he would see his mom pray for him but he never prayed. He began thinking about God when he got stranded in the ocean. When the plane crashed into the ocean Louie was tangled with wires and he couldn’t get loose but after passing out he woke up and wasn’t tangled anymore. He knew that it had to be God. On chapter 10 page 89 he never lost hope and kept Mac and Phil positive. Mac would scream that they were going to die but Louie thought that they would make it because out of all the men on the plane they were the ones who were still alive. He would tell them everything is going to be okay. He remembered what his professor said, “Your mind is everything. It’s like a muscle. You must use it, or it will waste away, just like a muscle” (Benge 97). So Louie would ask Mac and Phil about their lives growing up to keep their minds bright.
