Subcultures exist to give people an alternative identity, one that differs from the mainstream. This was prominent in the 1960's especially in the UK. Mods and Rockers were the key two youth groups in the 60s. The Rockers based off biker gangs and rock icons such as Elvis and mods inspired by The Teddy Boys and often linked with Jazz music. There were conflicts between these groups as their ideas and styles were quite different. There are many examples of when conflict between the Mods and Rockers turned into fights, most commonly seen in big coastal towns. Comparatively the 60's in The United States was not quite as liberating, potentially due to war not being over like it was in the UK. US was still very much involved due to the Cold War and the countries fight against communism. This meant that society did not have the best environment for freedom and self-expression to blossom.
The theme outcast is an important art theme as it can be linked to a freedom of expression from the individual. Allowing artists to escape from rules of art to create as they wish. Sometimes this can push the boundaries of political correctness or challenge societies beliefs.
