Some cases are harder to solve for instance the Orville Hodge Scandal. Orville Hodge ran for and won state auditor in 1952. Hodge actually wanted to be governor, but other party officials persuaded him into becoming the state auditor instead. Before Hodge became the state auditor he was a board member of Madison County; he also previously served three terms in the Illinois General Hall Assembly (Nunes Illinois 67). In 1947 Hodge helped craft legislation basic property tax system. Hodge help fund Buster Wortman and others campaign because they promised to legalize gambling after election. Hodge also had a real estate business, and investigators knew that their was no way the his real estate business was paying for all of that. Hodge went to trial for fraud taxes. When Hodge was on stand, he was asked about stolen funds, padded expense, and forged checks; he blamed it all on confederates. He also denied that he he used tax money to pay for his hotel, food, or his liquor bills. The court also asked why him and Paul Powell were together a lot, but Hodge had no answer. Phil Brown took the stand and said that Hodge had came to him and asked him to ease up on the gambling spots in and around the East St. Louis area. When Hodge was the state auditor, he set a budget of two point five million dollar budget which was way too high. The investigators on this case tried to figure out what Hodge did with the money that he stole (Nunes Illinois 68). In a fraud case there can be many people involved or not that many; this case has a good number of people. There was a very unique case in 1909. James William was a Black man that was accused of assaulting and murdering. James William was believed to have assaulting and murdering Mr. Boven’s daughter. Mr. Boven’s daughter was seventeen years old and her name was Anna Pelley. Anna Pelley’s body was found by her father Mr. Boven in an alley when he was on his way to visit his mother. In this unusual case there was a couple people involved. James William was a black male who was believed to have assaulted and killed Anne Pelley. Anna Pelley was a white seventeen year old female who was killed (Nunes Tettaton 188). There was also a mob involved and they killed two men before cops could do anything. Henry Salzner was a white male who was charged for murdering his wife (Nunes Tettaton 189). The outcome of this case involved two men dead. A mob came and took James William and brought him back to Cairo for public execution. The mob first tried to hang James William from an “electrically lit Hustlers steel arch spanning unpaved and at commercial Avenue eighth street”. When they were trying to do this, the rope broke and it would have been slow and difficult, so they shot him instead. After the mob killed him, they took his body to the scene of the crime and then burned it. There was estimate of thousand people there, and about five hundred of them were woman (Nunes
