Her writing revolves around diaspora, displacement and dislocation. She is an autobiographical writer, she writes about her experiences of life. She was born in London to Bengali parents but moved to Rhode Island but after spending so many years in a foreign land she got to know they are still alien on that land. In lahiri’s fiction displacement and diaspora is very prominent. From her first book the collection of short stories the interpreter of maladies (1999) it is clear that she explores the hidden reasons behind identity crises and impact of diaspora on the people, who are moving from one place to another place for betterment or for some change in the lives. She has touched the themes of dual identity and Indian diaspora. First generation diaspora and second generation diaspora she herself belongs to second generation diaspora. Nearly all of these stories deal with the lives of Indian immigrants in the United States, rendering the difficulties of making personal connections across cultural boundaries-and sometimes even within families-palpable to readers.
