With the marriage benefiting the parents more than the child, the parents will approve of the marriage and will push their son or daughter to marry a certain person. The parents push their son or daughter to marry someone for their own needs; they do not consider what their son or daughter’s priorities are. Rhadika is already in an arranged marriage and she has to do everything in the house. She is working at a call center and on top of that she basically does everything in the house. Shyam rants about how much chores Rhadika has to do around the house: “”Just that and cooking three meals a day and household chores and working all night and…”” (Bhagat 21). Priyanka has to do everything in the household and on top of all that she still has time to work at a call center. Even though she lives with her parent-in-laws, she gets no help from them and she still has to keep up with their demands: “”Nothing. They are getting married for themselves. It seems like in an arranged marriage, the marriage is more for the family rather than the two people getting engaged. Parents in the Indian culture are pressuring their son or daughter to have an arranged marriage for “the family”. But they need to get married to someone for their own sake. In the book, Priyanka is indecisive about marrying Ganesh. Ganesh is trying to convince Priyanka to marry him for her “family”. While Ganesh was talking on the phone with Priyanka, he states, “You head how happy she is about us getting married next month. My family is excited as well. Marriage is a family occasion, too isn’t it?”” (Bhagat 185). Ganesh is telling Priyanka about how her mom and his family are really excited about the wedding. It seems like everybody is excited except for Priyanka, and she is the one who is getting married. A lot of pressure is put on her back. At the end of the quote Ganesh states, “Marriage is a family occasion, too isn’t it?”” (Bhagat 185). The quote proves that the only reason why Priyanka should get married to him is to please her family. In this case, arranged marriages are actually meant to bring families together, “Marriage is not perceived as a relationship between two people but as a relationship between families and especially between the girl and her husband’s family”
