A Review of the Personal Impact The Battle of Okinawa is one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific during World War II.
The United States fought against Japanese forces where both sides sustained numerous casualties, majority of the buildings destroyed, and about a quarter of the civilian population died. The Japanese army contributed to most of those causalities; they showed little concern for the local populace. For example, Okinawans being used as human shields, outright murdered, food deprived, subject to malaria, and even urge to commit mass suicide during the war. This can be a bit unsettling when reflecting back to the encounter and unfortunately, the dark history is still present today in various museums and monuments. As a history enthusiast, it is remarkable I have the chance to call the island home. Considering what Okinawa has gone through over the years, it is a surreal moment. Seeing the pictures and listening to all the stories of the battles definitely is a humbling experience. To witness how much Okinawa has evolved since the war is amazing. The beauty behind all of this, being able to visit Hacksaw Ridge, visit the Cornerstone of Peace Memorial, or just simply travel on Route 58 to and from work. Route 58 is known as Highway No. 1 after World War II, it was a used as a main supply route for the United States military. The road is built primarily to deploy heavy vehicles and transport fuel trucks. This is why history is mind-blowing, take a simple road as Route 58 and for a large number of people it is just an obstacle between one destination to another.
