With a combination of disciplinary factors that are all demeaning in their own way, it takes a toll on the future these individuals will have. There are 2 forms of criminalization that take place in the youth control complex, material and symbolic. Material criminalization focuses more on physical punishments, such as serving sentences or receiving harassment from authorities. As for symbolic criminalization, this focuses more on the degrading aspects youth may encounter such as profiling or surveillance. While doling out harsh punishments may seem like the answer, those who receive more lenient forms of punishment have higher chances of rising above the complex. In most cases, there are both teachers that have the desire to help the youth with both criminalization and with rehabilitation. Certain teachers believe that by criminalizing these youth, by locking them away and continuing to give harsh punishments, will keep them in line. Typically, the opposite is true. The cases in which teachers are more caring and help youth with resources are more likely to be successful. The same goes for police officers. Officials who believe that profiling and stigmatizing will help to weasel out the criminals usually have more cases who are resistant and rebellious, while those who are kind and helpful to the youth have more individuals that overcome the complex. Community centers are also a vital part of this system. Centers who, like with teachers and the police, don’t present adequate resources and programs to the community often have more people that need them most, while the opposite is true for centers which provide their people with what they
