“One large study found that for each can added to a person 's daily diet, the risk of diabetes jumped by 22%. There are also links between sugar and heart disease, stroke and cancer (Marion).” Unhealthy products are loaded with excessive amounts of unhealthy ingredients that put a person at risk for developing health problems and diseases. In the beginning, unhealthy foods lead to short term complications, but over time can lead to detrimental long term problems that can and will cause a person’s death. A tax would control and limit the diseases that are caused by unhealthy products. “Meanwhile, the policy of taxing unhealthy foods is embraced by the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of its global strategy to tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (Cooper).” WHO strongly encourages the tax on unhealthy foods and drinks because it will promote a healthier lifestyle and reduce the development of non-communicable diseases, such as obesity. They affect poorer families, which spend a higher proportion of their income on food, more than wealthier ones (Cooper).” Another purpose of the tax is to implement better lifestyle choices and promote healthier product consumptions. The tax does not target poorer families, instead directly benefits them and their choices. Tejvan said that “it is unfair to tax fat people. It is discrimination (Tejvan).” This tax would not target a specific group. Likewise, this tax targets anyone and everyone who chooses to consume these unhealthy products. “Obesity in the uneducated was 29.6%, 26.4% in the 1-9 years of schooling group, and 15.4% in the high school or college group. It is evident from these results that illiteracy is a risk factor for obesity in these adults (State, Penn).” Many factors can contribute to the results of the study above, such as uneducated people may not be aware of how to purchase healthy foods and may not be aware of the certain foods that are healthy and crucial in a diet.
