Obesity among African American women vs. Caucasian American women
Introduction
Obesity has become an epidemic issue and its growing fast in this country. More than one-third of adults and seventeen percent of youth were obese in 2009 and 2010 (CDC, 2012). African American women have the highest obesity rate than any other race in the nation. Four out five of those women are African American according 2012 study by the Centers of Disease and Control and prevention (BU Today, 2012). The aim of this paper is to understand why African American women have higher rate of obesity when compared to other races. Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age adjusted rates of obesity of 47% that is followed by Hispanics who are 42%, non- Hispanic whites who are also 32.6% and non-Hispanic Asian who are 10.8% (CDC, 2014). This statistics shows that non-Hispanics black have a higher rate of obesity.
Background
Obese and overweight are both measured in BMI body mass an index. BMI relates to the height and weight of an adult. BMI is categorized as the underweight less than 18.5, normal weight is between 18.5 and 24.9, overweight is also between 25 and 29.9, and obesity is the BMI of 30 or greater (National Heart, Lung and blood institute). Obesity is caused by complex interaction of genetics, environmental factors in early development, physical inactivity, and food composition or socioeconomics status.
