This project consist in making a website research about the career you chose you wanted to be in the future. How long it take to become a professional, wages in different places and in my case I want to be a Labor and Delivery Nurse. The purpose about making this project is to explore a little bit more about that job and knowing that is hard but not impossible to reach the goal and become what I want to be. You will find information and charts about how many people work in this area. In this kind of job I didn’t find much information but here is what I…
In the VHA Workforce and Succession Strategic Plan of 2016, VISN aggregated data cites Registered Nurse as the 2nd highest Mission Critical Occupation in FY 2016 through 2022. VHA projects 39,256 RN losses from attrition over that six year span. Turnover is expected to be high because of early career quit rates, staffing shortages, voluntary retirement, staff satisfaction issues, and from the overall high mission critical nature of the RN position within VHA. On top of nurse attrition, the VHA continues to face increased competition for skilled nurses from private sector medical facilities. When competing against private sector facilities, recruitment and retention is particularly difficult for nurses with advanced professional skills, knowledge…
During my attendance to the Seattle Children’s Hospital Nursing Camp, I job shadowed multiple Registered Nurses in the Cancer Care Unit, Medical Floor, Operating Room, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In each department, I was able to observe the daily tasks of a nurse and how they interact with different patients. Not only did I job shadow nurses, but I also learned how to different procedures, such as: how to replace a trachea device, take blood pressures, insert feeding tubes, and how to inject vitamins and foods into feeding tubes. Through this, I assured myself that I really wanted to be a nurse.…
But one of the nurse in recovery unit refused to help her and said that S.D’s husband can help her with the task. On further inquiry, S.D. reports that nurses in recovery unit worked 12 hour shifts compared to the 8 hour shifts that nurses in Labor unit worked. And long work hours increase the risk for reduced job performance, obesity, injuries, and fatigue-related errors could harm patients (Caruso & Claire, 2014, p.19). Fatigued nurses also endanger others during their commute to and from work (Caruso & Claire, 2014,…
Impact of Twelve Hour Shifts Nurses who work in the hospital setting normally work twelve-hour shifts which allows for fewer patient hand offs and more time away from work. Over the years, nurses have come to like these shifts because they have more time off to spend with family or attend to other activities or personal matters. Some nurses preferred the longer shifts because they felt less wore out overall than coming in four to five days a week while other nurses thought it was ludicrous for their employers to expect them to work at their best for such long hours especially on their feet (Ball, Dall’Ora, & Griffiths, 2015). However, there are serious consequences to twelve-hour shifts and these need to be taken into consideration when deciding whether twelve-hour shifts are the best practice for the nursing profession.…
Grace Kondourajian Mrs. Klenke English III, Period 4 3 December 2015 Nursing Needs The nurses of every hospital are the glue that keeps things running smoothly and proficiently. Decades have suffered from the shortage of nurses all around the world. The shortage of nurses is an issue that affects almost every branch of health care. USA today addressed the topic with some shocking statistics:…
Mrs. Vansickle states, “It was very hard trying to keep up with everything, everything was thrown at me so fast and most things I couldn’t stomach, but I knew this is what I wanted to do and these patients needed my help” (Vansickle 2017). Nursing shortages are very crucial to the health care system. In an economic analysis of the nursing shortage, The Heritage Foundation says, “the new demand for medical services for the millions who are expected to enroll in Medicaid and the federal and state insurance exchanges, could cause workforces shortages to become catastrophic” (Snavley). Even if people sign up for their medical insurance it could be a possibility that it could not be an adequate visit to the hospital because their might not be enough nurses to help them with their needs.…
Adding to that, it requires hospitals that participate in Medicare to publicly report nurse staffing plans for each unit. This would place a limit and restriction on the amount of ‘floating’ nurses that are used as well as ensuring that unqualified RN’s are not forced to work in a unit especially if they lack the experience and education in that specialty. The bill also requires the collection, maintenance and submission of data by participating hospitals sufficient to establish a link between staffing systems and patient acuity. This data would include nurse-sensitive patient outcomes, operational outcomes such as work related injury or illness, as well as a vacancy and turnover rates and nursing care hours per patient…

Concerns about cost have led to the popularity of managed care options, first by corporations for their employees and now by governments, through the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Despite recent federal budget surpluses and proposals to expand funding and benefits in Medicare, there is serious concern among economists, legislators, and bureaucrats about the long-term solvency of both publicly funded programs. Concerns about cost are present in every form of nursing practice; they affect how work is organized, treatment plans for patients, and patients' perceptions of and participation in care. For example, even individuals with health insurance are wary of increased out-of-pocket expenses and no covered services. And there is heightened concern about pharmaceutical costs, fueled, in part, by the development of sophisticated new drugs.…
Nursing Shortage in Canada Nurses comprise the largest portion of health care professionals and are involved in direct patient care as front-liners. Nurses are considered the backbone of the health care system. In any health care setting, whether it is in the hospital or the community setting, nurses are needed in more numbers than any other medical professionals. However, the discrepancy between the availability of nurses and the demand is problematic as it directly affects the nursing care, patient’s outcomes, and ultimately the health care system.…
Over the past several years, the demand for nursing staff has increased tremendously. In fact, the nursing shortage in the United States is anticipated to grow to 260,000 by 2025. (Buerhas, Auerbach, & Staiger, 2009). This foreseen shortage in nurses builds off of the knowledge that the average age of nurses is increasing, whilst the demand for nurses increases. More nurses are retiring or are close to retirement and an equal amount of nurses are not being recruited to organizations to take over the jobs of nurses that have left.…
Mandating Nurse-Patient Ratios • Data shows that lowering the nurse-patient ratio similar to the California mandated ratios will result in lower mortality rates (Aiken et al., 2010). • When the workload is decreased nurses are more successful in identifying a change in patients’ health status, therefore able to intervene and provide a better outcome for the patient (Aiken et al., 2010). • Reports of job dissatisfaction and nurses’ burnout decreased when the nurse-patient ratio in other states were equaled to the California mandated ratios (Aiken et al., 2010). • Research shows that lowering the amount of workload for nurses’ results in fewer mistakes, improved nursing care, a supportive staff, and an overall better working environment (Aiken…
The AACN suggests nurses nurse staffing must ensure an effective match between nurse skills and patient needs (AACN, 2016). Not only does inappropriate staffing lead to medical errors, it can also bring about stressed and overworked nurses. The unit I work on is often short-staffed leading nurses to take on more than they are used to and leaving charge nurses scrambling to assign duties and calling in reinforcements. To the best of my ability, I will try to match my nurse’s abilities to the patient’s acuities and request critique if the assignments do not work effectively with current staffing. In order to address the staffing needs and the workflow that changes hour to hour, I believe the implementation of a resource nurse role will help address the staffing needs when patient loads become hectic.…
Introduction Nursing is a dynamic profession of providing care for infirm and sick individuals. This profession exists due to the demands of society. One major problem society is facing today is a shortage of nurses. Lois Berry and Paul Curry (2012) state, “by the year 2022, there will be a need of 60 000 full time registered nurses (p.35). Berry and Curry note that the number of nurses will decrease by 2022.…
