The AONE Nurse Executive Assessment Tool revealed I am a novice in serval areas related to knowledge and business skills. Knowledge is an essential asset to becoming an effective and influential nurse leader. According to Roussel, Thomas and Ratcliffe (2016) nurse leaders are obligated to “learn[ing] skills to lead and motivate Interprofessional teams [which] fosters collaboration and cooperation. An engaged workforce facilitates engaged patients through the patient experience and patient-centered care” (p. 29). The focus will be to educate, to have round table discussions, and review current policy at our organization and the influence of the political arena. As nurses, we have the power to influence policy development in several areas of healthcare. We have a unique advantage compared to those in the political world, we are at the bedside, and have the communication skills, training, and clinical expertise to can be viewed as valuable resources in political activism (Woodward, Smart, & Benavides-Vaello, 2016). The experiences that nurses have to offer are highly valued when it comes to the discussion that can potentially influence a new bill. Set up a meeting, and provide an invitation to be a key speaker at our Saint Vincent Hospital Retreat on Nurse Advocacy in Politics. Optimistically, two weeks were given to accomplish a meeting with our state representative.
May 8th-May 12th: Retreat for Nurse Advocacy in Politics to be held during 2017 Nurse’s Week as a featured event. This would be a new feature for the organization, and I feel it would gain more attention and hype if carried out during nurse’s week. If the retreat went well an invitation would be extended to those nurses interested in the legislation process to be the impetus in the future for the introduction of potential legislative bills.
May 13th-TBD: For those staff members interested in addressing certain issues or a problem, further education could be rendered. This group will need to be educated on the steps to create a formal meeting with state representation, making a proposal and how to gain other’s support. Proposals will be represented as either a House bill or Senate bill and are advanced to part of the legislative record. Depending on the support and activity of the bill determines if the House or Senate will
