Nelson Mandela was the first black president of south africa. He spent 27 years in prison for trying to overthrow the apartheid government. When he finished his time in prison he worked to achieve human rights and a better future for everyone in south africa. Nelson mandela was born in 1918 and he was in prison from 1962 from 1990. He became president of south africa in 1994, and retired in 1999. He passed away on the 5th of december 2013 due to lung illness. He was famous for his long fight again the government and racial prejudice. He became a hero to people all over the world as he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace.

There is also people that are from europe and asia there were mixed races. The Dutch set up the first white colony in South Africa in 1652. Dutch farmers who called themselves ‘boers’ which mean farmers. Then later Britain took over the Dutch colony in 1815. Whites and blacks fought over the land and the was war between the boers and the british. How South Africa was ruled: While Mandela was growing up, black people pretty much had zero say in how South Africa was run. The government was purely whites only. Majority of the black people were poor and they worked as servants in farms, factories and gold mines. The ANC: In 1944, Mandela decided to join the african national congress. The purpose of the ANC was for black people to get the same rights as white people. In 1948, The government decided to make a law to keep white and black people apart and that system was called ‘Apartheid’. This ment a white and a black people could not get married. Black people and white people could not share a table in a restaurant. Black and white people had to go to separate schools
