Leadership is a relatively new movement in the fields of business and psychology. Most see the need for a leader and the results of a leader’s actions, but grasping the concept of leadership is in the early stages. Of the many jobs a leader has, one could argue that motivating his or her followers to be one of the primary roles. But what exactly is motivation? Where does it come from? How can it be best utilized? Bauer and Erdogan (2016) define motivation as “the desire to achieve a goal or a certain performance level, leading to goal-directed behavior” and Pinder (2011) describes motivation as forces that guide the direction, intensity, and persistence of performance behaviors. Motivation is thought to derive from different environments, intrinsically and extrinsically, and is also dependent on the situation. Theories of motivation are generally grouped into process based or need based. A thorough understanding of motivation is necessary for all leaders regardless of their field as motivation is the key to momentum in life.

Overview of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Motivation is thought to come from two different places- intrinsic to the individual and extrinsic to the individual. Locke & Lantham (1990) argue that external influences overpower intrinsic motivation because whether or not an individual desires to do something, they will if they must.
