Throughout the history of the world, many humanitarians have had significant impacts on today’s society. Among these, certain few have strongly influenced a time for change and fought for their beliefs during that era. Although facing hardships along the way, many humanitarians strove for everyone’s well being, no matter their race, age, or gender. Three of the most remarkable humanitarians during past and present times include Mother, Irena Sendler, and Dorothea Lynde Dix. As a child, Mother Teresa had a strong and loving family. Her mother, Drana, and her father, Nikola, were of Albanian descent and devoted Catholics (Mother Teresa - Biographical). Nikola was an entrepreneur who also worked as a construction contractor and a trader of medicines. Mother Teresa and her family were profoundly involved in their local church and city politics. When she became of age, Mother Teresa attended convent-run primary and second-run secondary schools. She was very involved at school and sang in her local Sacred Heart Choir. While visiting the Church of the Black Madonna with her classmates, she felt a call from God (Mother Teresa Biography). Almost immediately, Mother Teresa knew she wanted to be a Roman Catholic nun and fulfilling her dreams she left her parental home at eighteen to join the Sisters of Loreto (Mother Teresa: Greatest Humanitarian of the Twentieth Century). In her early life, Irena Krzyzanowska, otherwise known as Irena Sendler, was born on February 10, 1910 in Otwock Poland (Irena Sendler Biography). Fifteen miles away from this small city was Warsaw, where Irena would move in later years (Irena Sendler). Irena’s father, Stanislaw Krzyzanowski, was a medical doctor who died of typhus (Irena Sendler Biography). Stanislaw greatly influenced Irena and shaped the career she wanted to partake in her life (Irena Sendler). Once Irena became of age, she met Mieczyslaw Sendler and eventually married him. The couple moved to Warsaw just before the outbreak of World War II. Here, Irena became a social worker and provided assistance to the needy. She used canteens, which contained meals and financial aid to provide help to jews in Warsaw (Irena Sendler Biography). In these canteens, Irena added money, clothing,medicine, and was able to easily get canteens to the disadvantaged easily since she was a social worker who could enter the ghetto daily (Irena Sendler). The Nazis eventually forced 350,000 jews into the Warsaw Ghetto, which was walled off and heavily guarded.
