These disagreements over power and the balance of free and slave states would lead to the formation of the Missouri Compromise. The compromise was formed in 1820, as an act to resolve the conflict that was going on in the country. At this time, James Monroe was president and noticed he needed to find way to settle the disagreements between the North and the South. Monroe had a mutual view on slavery he was neither for nor against it. In the end, he viewed slavery as an issue but he believed that the states had the right to make their own governmental decisions. The Missouri Compromise was thought to be a solution that would reduce tension between the states over the issue of land and slavery. When Missouri requested statehood they wanted to become a slave state. This request for slavery caused a debate among the congressmen of the North and the South. In all, the request was granted on the condition that slavery would be prohibited on the agreed Missouri dividing line. Before the official settlement there were many disputes between congressmen. The northerners and southerners were not closely involved in the issue of Missouri’s pro-slavery statehood until it’s controversy grew and started affecting the citizens of those
