Stroke can cause common physical problems that are as such; paralysis, movement, balance, or loss of muscle function; especially on one side of the body. Also, some post-stroke patients get problems with their vision, swallowing, tiredness, and controlling their bladder. Both of the physical therapy and the mirror therapy can help with stroke recovery. Some of the physical therapies are as such; Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), Functional electrical stimulation (FES), Motor imagery and mental practice, Positioning, Virtual reality and interactive video games, Partial body weight support (BWS), Biofeedback, and etc. Physical therapy can help stroke survivors regain muscle strength, coordination, balance, and control of movement. Mirror therapy (MT) has also shown success in treating stroke patients like improving upper limbs (i.e. hand, arm, wrist) motor recovery.
In the first article, the researchers aimed to evaluate the effect of the Mirror Therapy (MT) on upper limbs in patients with acute stroke. They had …show more content…
The mirror therapy for stroke patients as an intervention treatment is effective for upper limb motor recovery (i.e. hand) but evidence from experiments have proven that mirror therapy is not as effective for lower limb and pain. The researchers have shown that physical therapies on stroke patients are effective for improving balance, walking, coordination and etc. Therefore, as mentioned above, physical therapy has more variety in methods and it is quite effective in rehabilitation period in post-stroke patients but mirror therapy has only shown results in restoration of upper limbs
